Second Kalma Shahadah Meaning in Arabic and English

The Second Kalima, known as Kalima Shahadat, is the affirmation of faith and is the second among the six Kalimas. It is expressed in Arabic as follows:

أَشْهَدُ أنْ لا إلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ وَأشْهَدُ أنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Transliteration:

Ash-hadu Al-laaa Ilaaha Illa-llaahu Wahdahoo Laa Shareeka Lahoo Wa-Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadan ‘Abduhoo Wa Rasooluhu.

The English translation of the Second Kalima Shahadat is:

“I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, the One alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.“

This declaration, also known as the Shahadat, emphasizes the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ). Reciting this Kalima serves as a daily reminder. As it is undertaken after performing wudu, reinforcing the belief in Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) and guarding against Shirk.

The Second Kalima safeguards against four misconceptions:

  1. Shirk, which involves associating partners with Allah.
  2. Shak, uncertainty or doubt in the religion.
  3. Tashbeeh, linking Allah to an imaginary creature.
  4. Taalil, denying Allah’s role in creating the universe.

Aligning actions with this Kalima is vital, and it is recited five times daily during wudu. Its significance is underscored by its incorporation into the call to prayer (Azaan).
